The Cost of Full Time Travel

Every now and then, I get asked how much I spend on traveling. Unfortunately, I don’t have it documented in a way that I can easily track it. But the ProfessionalHobo does. Total cost for all of 2011?

  • Thanks for the reference! I’ve spent the last two years officially tracking my expenses (prior to that I only tracked my deductible expenses), and I find it quite illuminating – even empowering – to track them.

The trick when you track your expenses is not to feel guilty every time you spend money (because you have to record it and sometimes that makes you feel like you shouldn’t have spent the money)…but rather to spend as you wish (within reason!) and track your expenses without pre-judgement.

If you’re overspending, the proof will be in the pudding when you analyze your expenses (which initially should be done regularly).

It’s a good exercise to do, whether or not you’re traveling!

    • Very impressive that you document all this. It would be extremely powerful data if there was an aggregate data set from a number of travelers documenting what they spend on the travel trail.
