Travel Inspiration: An Interview with Talon Windwalker

talon windwalkerToday I’m talking with Talon Windwalker, the founder and dad of 1Dad1Kid.com, a travel blog sharing stories and advice about travel, food, and world-schooling.

We’ve mentioned before our goal to inspire every person in the world to get a stamp in their passport, and one of the ways to overcome any of your own perceived hurdles is to look to the people, projects, and stories of those on the road. Talon and his son represent a unique duo who have faced their own challenges to make their own world-schooling adventure a reality and I am so happy to share with you a bit more about this family duo.

1) What do you do?

If we’re talking about for income, my main source of income is my blog right now. I also receive a tiny bit of money from two ebooks I’ve written. When we’re in an area with good diving, I also sometimes work as a scuba instructor. I’m working on some other income streams at the moment as well.

2) What was your biggest obstacle to traveling and how did you overcome it?

I’ve never really believed I had an obstacle to traveling. At first I thought I needed much more money than it actually requires to travel. We’ve been traveling full-time as nomads since May 2011, and we live off less than 1/4th the income I had previously. And I’d say our quality of life is 3000 times better.

Traveling with my son was more of a concern because he had some special needs, and I wasn’t sure if travel would work out for him. Instead he’s completely thrived beyond my wildest expectations.

I just don’t believe in obstacles existing in my path. Instead, I see them as things encouraging me to think differently to get around them.

3) What are you most excited about right now?

It will sound completely corny but life. I suffered with chronic depression for most of my life, and since I began this nomadic lifestyle I’m joyous and love my life. I’m excited every day because there’s always something new to experience.

4) What’s next for you?

I’m focusing more on my passion for doing art (drawing and painting), and I need to work on the 2nd book in my fantasy novel series. I also began a travel food-related blog, and I’m working on getting that growing and moving.

5) What’s a cause you’re passionate about and why?

I have so many! I would have to say world schooling (aka unschooling) and free-range parenting. They’re such different concepts from what I grew up with, and they’re just amazing at what they accomplish.

A big thanks to Talon for sharing his approach to facing obstacles, as well as his current passions and projects, if you’d like to connect or find out more about Talon, you can find him on his OHW profile.

Sunday Inspiration: A Cinematic Journey through Southeast Asia

Wats in Chiang Mai, Thailand

We’ve been transforming the OHW blog over the past few months into what we hope has become a source of travel inspiration on the best of what is going on in the world of travel. A cornerstone mission behind Oh Hey World (and one we continue to go back to as we tweak and adjust OHW to make it exactly what the community wants and needs) is to encourage every person in the world to get a stamp in their passport. Dovetail that with our mission to connect travelers over shared passions and you have the current series and themes on the OHW blog:

There’s a lot going on over here is what I’m trying to say. And we’re all really grateful you’ve come along with the journey so far.

Without further ado, this week’s Sunday Travel Inspiration is a gorgeous video journey through Southeast Asia (one of my favorite parts of the world).

My own travels through Southeast Asia changed my life; the culture, religion, and attitudes of the people I encountered inspired me to return to the region over and over (I even temporarily expated in Chiang Mai several times). This video made a perfect weekend escape for me since I’m back home visiting family Stateside and loved the music and gentle journey the footage takes you on over the course of five minutes.

A few other links you might enjoy reading over a cup of coffee include:

  • Going, Going, Still Going? Voyager 1 at Solar System’s Edge: Geeking out over here. So cool I can’t even handle it; read up on what’s happening as Voyager hits the outer edges of our Solar System.
  • World Refugee Day 2013: A humbling photo essay highlighting what it’s like in refugee camps and areas in conflict.
  • Nat Geo Traveler Photo Contest 2013: Today’s the last day to enter the contest (so hurry if you’ve been meaning to) but otherwise enjoy the roundup of these stunning entries.
  • How Much Does World Travel Cost? This is my most popular post—read by 2+ million people looking to price out the cost of a round the world trip!
  • How To Quit Your Job And Travel: Bronwyn meticulously lays out how she did it with great books and resources to help you uncover how you can do the same; really thorough so I just had to share here in case you’re looking for some inspiration for your own travels.

That’s all I have for you this week, have a wonderful Sunday!

~Shannon

What is Your “What If”?

I just watched Dan and Audrey’s TEDx Talk (as a result of Spencer’s tweet). I highly, highly recommend watching it (20 mins)…

Two things come to mind.

Witnessing the generosity of those who own literally nothing is one of the most moving experiences you can have in life. It’s the most rewarding part of travel if you ask me.

It reaffirmed that listening to my best friend Jerry when he brought up the idea of backpacking Europe after college is the single best decision I’ve ever made. All the amazing adventures I’ve had and people I’ve met all over the globe potentially wouldn’t have happened had I not taken that first trip in 2005. I may have simply gone straight to the cubicle and never seen anything beyond the friendly confines of the US. But I chose to act and buy a ticket rather than succumb to the fear of the unknown (granted, with some prodding by Jerry), and my life has been infinitely more rewarding as a result.

Dan & Audrey – I don’t know you personally, though I have heard amazing things about you from people I trust deeply (namely, Shannon and Jodi). Thank you, for sharing your story. People like you are the best US foreign policy tool we have at our disposal. Beers (or shots) on me someday when we are in the same city.

Taking the Plunge to Travel

angkorwatIf it’s one thing I love seeing, it’s people taking the plunge from corporate life to the life of long term travel.

Which is why I love seeing blog posts such as this one by Matt Wald. Leaving everything behind for 6 months traveling the globe.

Truthfully, I’m not much of a fan of GroupOn. Impulse buying decisions are seldom good. Usually, it leads means buying crap you don’t need (trinkets are almost always impulse buys). However, IF it leads to people making impulse buys on plane tickets like Matt did, consider me a fan.

Congrats Matt, you executed unlike most. I’ll make a wager this is going to turn out to be the best money you’ve ever spent.

Dreaming of Backpacking? How to Make the Jump to Execution

Every single day in my “backpacking” search results in TweetDeck, I see tweet upon tweet from people who wish to travel the globe.

Tweets such as…

and…

and…

and…

Everyone WANTS to travel, or they SAY they want to travel. But when the rubber meets the road and it comes down to executing on that desire to travel, not enough people follow through and turn their dreams into reality.

Can I be blunt?

Stop making excuses. Stop asking people whether you should go or not. Stop reading travel blogs trying to decide whether you can afford it. Stop worrying whether your parents will be pissed. Stop caring whether you have a friend to go with you. Stop caring whether your boyfriend or girlfriend wants to go. Stop worrying about the fact that you won’t have a job when you get back. Obliterate the mindset that “normal people” don’t leave for months at a time.

Stop tweeting that you WANT to go.

Commit, Buy your f’ing ticket already and GO. Figure the rest out later.

Most Desired Destinations, Part 2

ghanaroadwipeout

Eastern coast of Ghana

I thought I’d continue the theme of most desired travel destinations I started. Over the last couple weeks, I asked seasoned travelers the following question:

What destination (country or city) is at the top of your list of most desired places to visit, and why?

The goal was to get beyond the established locations like London, Paris, Rome, Bangkok, etc. Below are some additional responses…

Dani Blanchette – Going Nomadic

There’s a ton of places, but one place I really, really want to go is Indonesia.  I want to see komodo dragons, have Sumatran coffee (my favourite kind) in Sumatra, and go see archaeological remains in Java.  I also want to see a real volcano.

Shannon O’Donnell – A Little Adrift (Oh Hey World advisor)

Africa is at the top of my list—and I know that’s a broad answer, but I’ve been to so many countries and yet I haven’t made it anywhere in Africa. If I had to narrow it down though, I would start my journey with several months of volunteering in Kenya.

Jessie Speilvogel – Split Aces Media

Thailand because if Thai food is this good in the states… I can only imagine what it’s like when I try the real deal! Also, I’ve got a bucket list to attend to, and Thailand, Singapore, Laos, and Cambodia are all waiting to be crossed off.

Val Dawson – This Way to Paradise

I most want to go and discover Brazil. The Brazilian people always seem so happy and full of life. I don’t want to just go to the touristy spots either, as I have met many locals who have told me about some of the hidden spots such as Porto Segura.  I also can’t wait to try Brazilian food, as this is a type of cuisine that I’m am not yet familiar with.

NaEun Park – Nanana Travels

My most desired place to go is India. It’s been a country I’ve always wanted to go to but held myself back for a long time. I grew up in Southeast Asia since I was 7 years old and always wondered what it ‘feels’ like to step into the region for the first time. I don’t really remember anything apart from the fact that it was hot and I didn’t get to experience too much of a ‘culture shock.’ I think India will be one of those places where I’ll get to experience it but I also wanted to make sure I was mentally prepared and be open to whatever I experience there – basically, letting go of all expectations. I think I’m ready for whatever India will show me and I’m looking forward to visiting it very soon!

What destination is at the top of your list?

Most Desired Destinations to Visit – from Seasoned Travelers

When it comes to desired destinations for travelers, you likely know the drill. Paris, Rome, New York, London, Bangkok, etc. But what about destinations a bit off the beaten path? The best way to figure out those locations are by asking a range of extremely seasoned travelers who have already visited the most popular spots.

Over the last couple weeks, I asked several seasoned travelers the following question:

What destination (country or city) is at the top of your list of most desired places to visit, and why?

Below are their responses….

Ian Ord – Where Sidewalks End (Oh Hey World advisor)

I’d have to say Myanmar is on the top of my travel radar at the moment. It’s started getting a lot of heavy tourist traffic in recent years, and I’d like to visit it while it’s tourism is still in it’s infancy.

Nick Loper – ShoeSniper

Way too many! If I had to pick just one, I would probably go with Thailand in general and Chiang Mai specifically. Everyone I know who’s gone raves about it and seems to be especially popular among like-minded Internet entrepreneurs.

Leslie Forman – LeslieForman.com

I’d love to visit Cuba. I’m fascinated by the politics and mixed economy of the place, and I think that it’s a country that will change dramatically in the next ten years or so. I want to stay in family-run guesthouses and ride in impeccably-maintained 50s-era cars. I’d like to sip mojitos and chat with everyone.

Alana Morgan – Paper Planes

I never seem to have a solid reason for wanting to visit a place. For me it’s less about specific sites, cities and activities and more about a feeling that I get for a place and can’t explain.  I would love to go to Morocco or Turkey.  I don’t know much about either but for some reason have always been drawn to the art, architecture and mystery those places hold for me.

Barret Caldwell – Bearly Home

Nova Scotia/Prince Edward Island are at the top of my list right now….I’m determined to make it up there come April or May as it warms up…I want to see whales/lighthouses/eat seafood/and get lost on a whirlwind drive around the coast of Canada’s Maritimes.

As for me? I constantly go back and forth between South Africa and China. My best friend will tell you I’ve been talking about China since senior year of college. The economic activity over there is mind-blowing (at least from afar), and I want to see the next world superpower from the inside before the country is totally commercialized. My interest in South Africa has been a combination of the sheer natural beauty of Capetown – people I’ve talked to say it’s the most beautiful city in the world, gaining a better understanding Apartheid (& movies like Invictus), and the fact that my old boss at Zillow, David Gibbons, now lives there. If I had to pick one, I’d go with South Africa.

What destination is at the top of your list? Are you already planning the trip?
